Newfoundland dogs were named after the island of Newfoundland.
It is said that the breed of this dog was well known in the island of Newfoundland a long time ago. And then there is another story about the Newfoundland dog’s beginnings, one that tells of them being descendants of black bear dogs.
Whatever is the true story, Newfoundland dogs are well behaved dogs with a shaggy type coating.
These dogs have three different looks. They are available in black, white and even a bronze color.
These dogs are usually black, white or bronze looking in color and some even have a white marking on its chest.
It is said that the white marking on the dog’s chest is an easy way of telling if the dog is of true Newfoundland breed.
Newfoundland dogs possess a long body with chests that are broad which makes the dog look strong and powerful. Although the Newfoundland dogs are built this way, most of them weigh a lot at 110 -120lbs. No doubt this is a huge dog.
At home with its owner and family, Newfoundland dogs pick up easily when you decide to train them. And although they have deep yet strong barks, they are considered as harmless dogs, especially when they need to be. They will protect their guardian and will serve as a good watchdog and most of all they are great with kids.
Health wise, these dogs are prone to quite a few diseases. Some of these diseases include a hip and elbow dysplasia, bladder problems and defective heart valves. Because of this, most Newfoundland dogs die at a very early age.
